Chevron Case Study

Staying On Top of the Energy Industry

The Chevron Corporation is one of the world’s largest energy companies, employing more than 56,000 people in more than 180 countries. With business reaching into just about every corner of the globe, Chevron generates billions of memos, emails, reports, and more, in order to circulate information and keep the enterprise running at the head of the pack.

The Challenge:
Chevron and its subsidiaries use Microsoft SharePoint 2007 to share and exchange information. Yet, it was still a challenge for offices in one part of the world to use materials created by an office in another part of the world. And, the amount of information, shared electronically, was growing exponentially. As a result, the company faced a bit of chaos and a productivity hurdle that begged for more muscle.

Making matters more challenging was Chevron’s need to manage critical regulatory compliance issues, confidently. Chevron required flexibility to make changes and stay current with the industry.

Often, with safety issues at stake in the energy industry, there was no room for mistakes because of an information breakdown or delay.

The Solution:
Chevron chose to combine its current document sharing system with a software solution that puts all the pieces together, no matter where they are in the world, uniting the information in such a precise way that accuracy was also ensured.

Three years ago, Chevron began an information overhaul known as its “Global Information Link” (GIL), which evolved into a system that unifies desktop platforms across the company and provides connectivity to all employees on the corporate network.

Now, SchemaLogic Enterprise Suite (SES) for SharePoint 2007 is taking GIL to the next level, creating the infrastructure for an entirely new corporate information system called GIL3.

How It Works:
For GIL3, Chevron enlisted SchemaLogic to manage and facilitate collaboration for its corporate File Plan, integrate it with the existing SharePoint system, and synchronize the entire process across the globe.

The total package allows digital information assets to be described consistently, using names and tags within each SharePoint site. Corporate knowledge can adjust with the industry and stay relevant.

Moreover, the focus on consistency enables Chevron employees to be extremely specific with its descriptions and data sharing in order to manage sensitive regulatory and safety matters efficiently and accurately.

Challenge Met:
When completed, Chevron will have deployed one of the largest implementations of SharePoint in the world, with SES playing a key role to make it happen.

Already, Chevron has:

  • Efficient governance of unstructured content
  • Accurate and timely regulatory compliance
  • Shared access to billions of pieces of information
  • Security and confidence

With such high level consistency in a new system, Chevron has notable productivity gains and company savings. The SchemaLogic Enterprise Suite empowers thousands of employees, in the next cubicle or worlds apart, to find, share and organize the information necessary to support high quality business practices for Chevron and its subsidiaries.
